For Ryan McDermid, each day at Wausau Supply Company brings something new—and that’s exactly what keeps him energized. As he approaches his five-year anniversary with the company this March, Ryan continues to thrive in a role that blends problem-solving, relationship-building, and boots-on-the-ground support.
Wausau Supply operates with two primary roles—siding specialists and territory managers—and Ryan’s work bridges both worlds. From supporting yard and dealer partners to jumping in with contractors on installation training, he’s the trusted middleman who helps keep projects moving. His days often include answering technical questions, providing onsite guidance, or grabbing photos in the field to help contractors troubleshoot and grow. “There’s always something different,” he says—and that variety is what makes the job so fulfilling.
What keeps him committed to Wausau Supply goes beyond the work itself. As an employee-owned company with strong core values, a supportive culture, and an ownership stake for every employee, Wausau has built a team that truly stands behind its products. The company offers both high-end distribution lines and its own manufactured materials—complete with an in-house coating process that sets them apart in the industry. “We don’t just sell a product,” Ryan explains. “We stand behind it.”
Ryan’s passion for the trades and his appreciation for community made joining NARI Milwaukee a natural fit. He’s especially grateful for his involvement with the Next Gen Trades program and the work being done to introduce students to career paths in the remodeling and building industries. “I’ve always been in the trades,” he says. “Getting involved with youth and showing them what’s possible—that’s something I really care about.”
But what has surprised him most is how supportive the NARI community is. “The building industry can be competitive,” Ryan says. “But at NARI, everyone helps each other. You can walk into any After 5 and feel welcome, even if you’re new. People make you feel comfortable right away.”
His journey with NARI gained real momentum when he joined the Outreach Committee and Foundation Board—groups he credits with helping him “buy into everything” the organization stands for. He was also on the team that helped launch NARI education opportunities and certifications, always looking for new ways to bring more value to members and the industry.
His advice to new members? Get involved.
“Join a committee, put yourself out there, and don’t be afraid,” he says. “That’s where you make a difference—and where you really start to see the value of being part of NARI.”
Ryan’s dedication to the trades, to continuous learning, and to lifting others up—and his positive impact on the Foundation Board and Outreach Committee—make him an outstanding example of what NARI membership is all about.
