For Gayle Trudeau, owner of Picky Painters, success has never been measured by the number of walls painted or projects completed. Instead, it's measured by the relationships she builds, the people she encourages, and the smiles she leaves behind.

Whether she's greeting members at a NARI event, brainstorming ideas for the Home Improvement Shows, introducing two professionals who should know each other, or delivering treats to her painting crews, Gayle has an incredible gift for making people feel seen, valued, and connected.

It's a gift that has shaped both her business and her life.

A Business Built on Relationships

Ask Gayle what a typical day looks like, and she'll smile. "It always starts with a cup of Joe," she says. She's referring not only to her morning coffee, but also to her son Joe, who serves as Picky Painters' project manager. From there, every day takes on a life of its own.

One morning she may be meeting homeowners and crews to review the start of a project. Another day she's preparing estimates with remodeling partners, checking on job progress, organizing schedules, handling billing, or stopping by a jobsite with treats for the team. "No two days are alike," she says. "That's exactly what I love."

Ironically, Gayle's path to business ownership didn't begin with painting. It began at NARI Milwaukee.

Working for the association introduced her to remodelers, subcontractors, suppliers, and business owners who unknowingly became her teachers. "Looking back, I'd describe it as a personal and professional metamorphosis through association." Those experiences gave her the confidence to launch Picky Painters, but they also gave her something she never expected. "They led me to incredible relationships—including meeting the love of my life."

Family at the Heart of Everything

If relationships are the foundation of Gayle's business, family is its heartbeat. "Family has always been at the heart of Picky Painters because family has always been at the heart of my life."

Today, several family members work alongside her, each bringing their own strengths and talents to the business. From her son Joe's remarkable attention to detail to the professionalism and teamwork shared across the company, Gayle believes clients can feel the difference. "Our clients often comment on how kind everyone is and how seamlessly the entire process works." Nothing makes her prouder than hearing compliments not only about the finished paint job, but about the people who completed it.

Caring Beyond the Paint

When asked what sets Picky Painters apart, Gayle doesn't hesitate. "It's how deeply we care." She describes Joe noticing tiny imperfections most people would never see.

She talks about carefully cleaning each workspace at the end of every day and respecting every home as though it were their own. Most importantly, she emphasizes that their commitment doesn't end when the project is finished.

"If a homeowner notices something after we've completed the project, we're quick to return and make it right." That level of care has created something far more valuable than repeat business. It's built trust.

Why NARI Feels Like Family

Although Gayle officially joined NARI Milwaukee as a member in 2022, her connection to the organization began years earlier while working on staff.

Today, she remains one of its biggest champions. "I simply love NARI." To her, it's much more than a professional association. "It's an extended family."

One of the questions she hears most often is how NARI members can possibly network with their competitors. Her answer is simple. "We help each other."

If another painting company is a better fit for a homeowner's project, she'll gladly recommend them. Likewise, fellow members do the same for her. "There's plenty of work to go around," she says. "When we support one another, everyone benefits—especially our clients."

That spirit of collaboration is what keeps her engaged year after year. She also loves that NARI is constantly evolving. "Our industry changes, and organizations need to grow with it. NARI does an outstanding job of listening to members, encouraging ideas, and continually looking for ways to improve."

The Joy of Connecting People

Many people describe Gayle as one of the best networkers they've ever met. She laughs at that description. "Honestly, I don't even think of it as networking." "I simply love people."

Whether she's introducing new members around a room, connecting businesses that should know one another, or encouraging someone who's attending their very first event, Gayle believes every interaction matters. "I don't believe anyone should ever feel alone or forgotten."

For her, there is very little distinction between business and life. "The relationships I build are genuine." She believes community isn't created through one big event. "It's built one person, one conversation, and one act of kindness at a time."

Making the Most of Membership

Gayle's personal mission aligns perfectly with the mission of NARI Milwaukee. Whenever she introduces someone to the organization, she gives them the same advice. "You get out of NARI what you put into it." She encourages members to attend events, volunteer, join committees, read the newsletter, and simply show up. The relationships that grow from those experiences, she says, are priceless. Because of those connections, approximately 80% of Picky Painters' business now comes from fellow NARI remodeling companies. "NARI has helped me grow not only as a business owner, but as a person."

Professionally, she's especially grateful for opportunities like serving on the Home Improvement Show Committee and helping create special features alongside the NARI staff.

Personally, however, one NARI memory rises above all the others. "If I didn't mention that I met the love of my life through NARI, I'd be remiss."

Leave People Better Than You Found Them

Ask Gayle what motivates her to keep volunteering, sharing ideas, and helping wherever she can, and her answer couldn't be simpler. "My hope is simply to leave people a little happier, a little more connected, and a little more hopeful than they were before we met." That philosophy extends to every part of her life, from running Picky Painters to serving the remodeling industry.

Looking ahead, she hopes to continue growing the business while staying true to the values that built it: continuing education, exceptional craftsmanship, happy clients, and a team that enjoys coming to work every day. She also wants to express her sincere appreciation for the NARI Milwaukee community that has supported Picky Painters along the way.

"We are incredibly grateful to all of the NARI companies who have trusted Picky Painters to provide the beautiful finishing touch to their clients' spaces," Gayle says. "It is a privilege we do not take for granted, and we genuinely appreciate the confidence you've placed in our team. We love working with you and look forward to many more years of partnering together." And, of course, she'll continue dreaming up a few more "crazy ideas" along the way.

She closes with one final invitation. "If you see me at a NARI event, please don't hesitate to introduce yourself. I love meeting new people, hearing their stories, and making new connections."

Then she adds with a smile: "I promise if I see you standing alone, it won't be for long."
